Upper Westerners don't support their own - Bagbin

Defeated presidential candidate of the opposition NDC and sitting Member of Parliament for the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency, Hon. ASK Bagbin has complained that, the people of the Upper West region do not support each other.

The longest serving member of Ghana’s parliament and Second Deputy Speaker was speaking on a live radio interview in Wa. This was after the party’s flag bearer race that saw the election of John Dramani Mahama as the presidential candidate of the NDC.

Though Hon. Bagbin lost the elections, he stated that he won the elections in his home constituency and was grateful for the support given him and threw a big party after the elections and further assured that he would continue to bring development to his people.

Hon. Alban Bagbin explained that anytime a member of the party contested at the national level, the necessary support from the region is not also enough. Remarking history, Hon. Alban cited “Bede, Alice Boom, Alijata, Alaji Mahama Iddrisu, Betty Mould Iddrisu and Kala Caesar” as victims who never got the needed support to win national elections of their party.

Speaking to W FM, he said Gonjas voted for Mahama because they preferred their own to be leader and not because he (Bagbin) is not fit to be. He gave examples where the current party leadership didn’t have any member from the region on board the national executives.

Hon. Bagbin said the 2010 Population and housing census said the region had one of the largest tribes in the country explaining such numbers could have done the trick in most instances. “we don’t support our kinds and we don’t campaign for them too, so that we can also win” adding that he is not surprised he lost the elections as that is the attitudes of people from the region.

He however assured his support after disbanding his campaign team to pledge his full support to John Mahama as the party needed everyone on board to win the general elections in 2020.

The Nadowli-Kaleo legislator cautioned the public over social media reports that infiltrated his campaigns and should be disregarded.
