See Why John Mahama, NDC Still Not In Court Weeks After Rejecting Election Results

A Former Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Chief Akilu Sayibu has unveiled why the leader of the opposition NDC, John Dramani Mahama finds it difficult to challenge the 2020 general election results in Court.

According to him, there are three (3) main incidences of the past that are haunting Mr. Mahama and the NDC, and preventing them from taking legal actions against the Electoral Commission (EC) for declaring Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as winner of the election.

The opposition leader has since the declaration of the 2020 presidential election results refused to concede defeat but rather came out strongly to announce to the world about his willingness to challenge the results through every legitimate means.

Surprisingly, Mr. Mahama has rather impelled his numerous party supporters across Ghana to stage street protests to demonstrate their displeasure against the election results. The supporters have since besieged the offices of the electoral commission and thronged the major streets with placards amidst road blocks and burning of lorry tyres.

                                                                                    Mr. Akilu Sayibu

In a Facebook post on his wall, however, Mr. Akilu Sayibu had quoted some previous comments by some top personalities concerning outcomes of elections which he said are preventing Mr. Mahama and the NDC from going to the Court.

He quoted Mr. Aseidu Nkatia, General Secretary of the NDC who during a similar disputed election in 2012 openly uttered that: “Any idiot can go to court” obviously referring to then opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo who ended up in Court to challenged the outcome of the 2012 presidential results.

Mr. Akilu also quoted “Elections are won at the polling stations and not in the court room” by a former Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Afari Gyan in 2013; and what Justice Atuguba at the Supreme Court in 2013 that “No African nation has overturned elections results before and Ghana cannot be the first”.

Meanwhiele, the NDC Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini has said that it is unfair for any person to condemn the party’s supporters for engaging in street protest to demonstrate their displeasure against the outcome of the 2020 general elections.

The MP said that the opposition NDC had several legitimate means on the table to reject the election results announced by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, of which the street protest is one.

Speaking on JoyNews Channel’s Am Show recently, Mr. Suhuyini emphasised that the NDC's contestation is for the presidential results and some parliamentary results.

However, the Tamale North MP did not specifically mention whether Mr. John Dramani Mahama and the NDC would be heading for the Court to seek redress.

The NDC put up a sterling performance in the 2020 general elections polling over 6 million votes and winning 137 parliamentary seats as same as their opponent, NPP.
