NDC Nationwide Protest In Limbo As EC Goes For One Month X-Mas Break

The ongoing Nationwide street protestations by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is now in limbo following the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to take a month-long Christmas break.

The NDC has since the declaration of the 2020 general elections registered their disagreement over the results and have occupied the offices of the EC with series of protests in all the 16 regions of Ghana.

But the Electoral Commission has served public notice to go on a month Christmas break after what it described as a successful and peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections.

The offices of the Commission will therefore be closed to official duties from Wednesday December 23rd 2020 and resumes on Tuesday January 19th 2021.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by the Deputy Chairman, Corporate Services at the EC, Dr. Bossman E. Asare (PhD) reads “Following the successful and peaceful conduct of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, Management has decided that the Commission will break for Christmas and New Year on Wednesday 23rd December, 2020 and resume duty on Tuesday, 19th January, 2021.

On behalf of the Electoral Commission, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”.

This will affect the NDC’s ongoing nationwide protest against the EC. The 2020 flagbearer of the NDC, Mr. John Mahama has deployed his numerous party supporters across Ghana to stage street protests to demonstrate their displeasure against the election results. The supporters have since besieged the offices of the electoral commission and thronged the major streets with placards amidst road blocks and burning of lorry tyres.

The protests have become a major worry to majority of Ghanaians especial the peace mediators who are fervently urging Mr. Mahama and the NDC to go to Court to seek redress.
