Desist From Using Pupils As Labours –Ministry Of Education

The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to put measures in place to ensure that teachers stop engaging pupils in any form of labour.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, gave this directive last Monday when he led the government delegation to visit the families of the nine students who got drowned last Friday while crossing the Oti River after they were sent to work on their headmaster's farm.

This directive came as a result of teachers not obliging to the code of Professional Conduct for Teachers in Ghana that defines labour as the exploitative use of a pupil or student if it deprives him or her of education, leisure or development.

The Deputy Minister charged people in reputable positions to cease pleading for teachers who have been caught indulging in nefarious acts and allow the law deal with them.

He indicated that the government had sent clinical psychologists and counsellors to Saboba to counsel pupils, teachers and families of the deceased students.
