Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) have been urged to consider themselves capable of holding high positions in Ghana and to engage in economic activities to enhance their livelihoods. This empowering call was made by Alfred Boafo Mensah, the Upper Manya Krobo District Director of the Department of Social Welfare, during a ceremony where 45 PWDs received income-generating items in Asesewa.
The items distributed included industrial sewing machines, cassava milling machines, deep freezers, and ice chests. This initiative brings the total number of PWDs supported in the district this year to 160, with other forms of assistance including educational, medical, and financial support.
Encouragement and Guidance
Mr. Mensah reminded the beneficiaries that "disability does not mean inability" and encouraged them to overcome any challenges they face. He emphasized the importance of using the items for their intended purposes to achieve financial independence and improve their quality of life. He also called on Ghanaians to eliminate stigma and instead show love and support to PWDs.
Government’s Commitment
District Chief Executive Joe Sam highlighted the initiative as part of the government’s effort to reduce street begging by PWDs and promote economic independence. He urged beneficiaries to utilize the opportunities provided by the Akufo-Addo administration and expressed hope for the government's retention in power after the December 7 elections.
A Call for Support
Joseph Nartey Kortey, Chairman of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled in the district, expressed gratitude to the government for establishing the Persons with Disability Management Fund. He appealed to NGOs, civil society organizations, and individuals to extend further support to PWDs.
The gesture serves as a reminder of the potential and resilience of PWDs and highlights the collective responsibility to ensure their inclusion and empowerment in Ghana’s socioeconomic development.
