Peace Pact 2024: Rev. Prof. Nash Applauds National Peace Council and Presidential Candidates

Rev. Professor Emmanuel Yao Nash, CEO of the Ghana Peace Awards (GPA), has praised the National Peace Council (NPC) and the twelve presidential candidates contesting the 2024 general elections for committing to the 2024 Peace Pact. This initiative, signed by key contenders including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), underscores a collective commitment to ensure peace before, during, and after the December 7 polls.

Commitment to Peace

Rev. Prof. Nash lauded the NPC’s efforts to engage political leaders in this vital process, stating that the Peace Pact sets a standard for responsible campaigning and governance. He expressed hope that all candidates and their followers would abide by electoral rules, ensuring a peaceful election process.

Visa Restrictions for Politicians

The GPA CEO reiterated his call for embassies in Ghana to temporarily halt the issuance of visas to politicians, the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensah, her deputies, and their families until the elections conclude. He even suggested that their families be temporarily relocated to Ghana during the election period.

Rev. Prof. Nash revealed that his organization’s research, aimed at promoting peace, formed the basis of this visa restriction proposal. He noted that similar measures have been successfully implemented in other African and European countries, though he lamented the lack of credit given to his organization for originating the idea.

The U.S. Embassy has already announced visa restrictions for individuals seeking to undermine Ghana’s democratic process, reinforcing the GPA’s recommendations.

Call for Responsibility

Rev. Prof. Nash urged the Election Security Taskforce, the Electoral Commission, political parties, and the media to uphold transparency and integrity throughout the electoral process. He emphasized the importance of a free and fair election that reflects the genuine will of the Ghanaian people.

He ended his remarks with a prayer for peace, unity, and a successful election that would safeguard Ghana’s democracy.
